Mechanisms of Embolism Repair

In Vivo Visualization of Embolism Repair

Using High Resolution Computed X-Ray Tomography (HRCT), a system similar to medical x-ray CT systems, we can visualize the refilling mechanism in live plants as they rehydrate after experiencing drought induced embolisms. This new technique offers valuable insight into the timing and mechanisms involved in embolism repair. In this video, we can see water droplets (blue) that formed on the inside of embolized vessels. Those droplets eventually expand to fill the vessel. For specific details of the model, please see Brodersen et al., 2010 in the journal Plant Physiology.

A Model for the Embolism Repair Mechanism in Grapevine

From our observations using in vivo HRCT we have developed an embolism repair model. For specific details of the model, please see Brodersen et al., 2010 in the journal Plant Physiology.
